Book of Moon — Power Evaluation
Final Score: 61 ± 6 · Confidence: Medium
- Intrinsic: 58 · Deck: 63 · Meta: provisional
- Primary role: Board breaker / Going-second · Secondary: Negation/Interaction
Why it scores here
Book of Moon is a cheap, one-copy-at-a-time Quick-Play that converts into real board disruption: it turns a face-up monster into a face-down Defense Position card at the cost of one card, which is why its effect_interaction is the main score driver. It does not build a board, has no searcher or refuel, and only one combo in the evidence touches it, so combo_conversion and resource_economy stay low. The 400-deck sample is high-accessibility evidence for a generic staple, not evidence of intrinsic strength, so the widespread inclusion lifts the score only modestly. ATK, rarity and view_count contributed nothing.
Axis scores
| Axis | Score | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Accessibility | 78 | Quick-Play Spell that is live from hand and runs at an average of 1.85 copies across the 400 sampled decks in 159 archetypes, with no searcher route in the evidence (verified deck stats; inference for hand access). |
| Combo & Conversion | 28 | Appears in one recorded combo as a non-starter, non-searched piece, and the example board is a one-card line that the card itself does not drive (observed, thin sample). |
| Resource Economy | 20 | Spends a card to change one monster's battle position and returns no card advantage or refuel in any evidence (verified from card text; inference for the -1 net). |
| Effect & Interaction | 58 | Flip-to-Defense targets any face-up monster and can be used in response to attacks, but it is soft interaction that leaves the monster on the field (verified from text; inference for the strength rating). |
| Material Utility | 0 | A Spell card, so it is never material and offers no body value (verified from card type). |
| Resilience & Flexibility | 48 | Can be set and activated later, but a monster effect such as a negation can answer it, and it has no recursion (verified from text; inference). |
| Deck-Building Efficiency | 85 | One-card slot with no garnet or lock, copies are redundant and splashable, and the average 1.85 copies per deck shows it fits many lists (observed deck stats). |
Calculation
Weight profile: 0.7 Board breaker + 0.3 Negation/Interaction. Intrinsic ≈ 58, Deck ≈ 63, Meta = provisional. Modifiers: none. Final formula: 0.40*Intrinsic + 0.60*Deck
Strengths
- Cheap, generic interaction that changes a monster's battle position for one card
- Playable in 159 archetypes, so it has a wide home base
- Low garnet risk and easy to splash, with copies that are interchangeable
Weaknesses
- Does not build a board, search, or refuel, so it gives no card advantage
- Soft interaction: the monster stays on the field and can keep acting
- Its power depends on the opponent's attacks or board, not on this card's own line
Counters / choke points
- Monster effects that negate or respond to the activation (e.g. Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, listed as a common partner)
- Monsters that do not need to attack, since the card only redirects battle position
Best use
Board breaker / flip-to-defense tempo. Decks: Going-second decks that need flip-to-Defense tempo, Generic Spell/Trap packages across the 159 archetypes in the sample. Suggested copies: 2.
Evidence & gaps
- Verified: Text: target 1 face-up monster and change it to face-down Defense Position (card text); Quick-Play Spell with no material or refuel clause in the text; Average 1.85 copies across the sampled decks; 159 distinct archetypes (deck stats)
- Observed: Appears in 1 of 1 recorded combos and is not a starter, searched, or material piece; Top partners are Mystical Space Typhoon (62%) and Mirror Force (45.2%) in the sample
- Inferred: Usable as a flip-to-defense response to attacks, which places it as soft interaction; Accessibility rating based on hand access and multi-copy inclusion
- Data gaps: Every one of the 400 sampled decks runs it (decks_running_main = 400), so the sample only contains decks that include the card and the deck percentages are not a random inclusion rate Only one combo contains the card, so combo_conversion and centrality rest on a thin sample No banlist token; assumed 3 copies (unlimited) No rulings or Vietnamese card-text variance checked beyond the English description top_card_context shows no ranking, so popularity was not used as a signal
